UAE announced on Saturday that it would overhaul its Islamic personal laws. Their policies include allowing unmarried couples to live together, loosening alcohol restrictions, and criminalizing ‘honor killings.’ It reflects the changing image of a country trying to pitch itself as a skyscraper-studded tourist destination. However, its legal system is based upon a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Twitter chief technology officer Parag Agrawal will replace Jack Dorsey as CEO

The Twitter CEO will step away from his post as chief executive of the social media platform, the company announced Monday. Former chief technology officer Parag Agrawal was appointed CEO effective immediately. “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders,” Dorsey explained.

Man sentenced to death for smuggling ‘Squid Game’

Smugglers who sold Netflix’s hit series “Squid Game” in North Korea have been sentenced to death by firing squad. The man allegedly smuggled Korean-language shows into North Korea on USB drives from China. Several high school students were caught watching the footage. One student who bought one of the flash drives was sent to prison for life.

US blacklists tech firms in Pakistan & other countries over nuclear trade

US government has blacklisted 28 tech firms in Pakistan, China, Russia, and Japan. These companies are alleged to have been involved in the development and distribution of military and nuclear projects. The move has targeted 13 corporations in Pakistan and 12 enterprises in China. The companies are making it difficult for US companies to sell technology to listed companies.

National Geographic’s famous green-eyed ‘Afghan Girl’ has made her way to Italy

It has been announced that ‘Afghan Girl’, the famous green-eyed figure pictured in National Geographic magazine’s iconic cover picture has arrived in Italy. Sharbat Gula, now a woman in her late 40s, was evacuated from war-torn Afghanistan following the Taliban’s takeover of the country.  The evacuation of Gula was organized by Italy after receiving her request for assistance.

Dubai cricket chief offers to host India Pakistan bilateral series

Abdur Rahman Falaknaz, Chairman of Dubai Cricket Council, has offered to host a bilateral series between Pakistan and India. It was almost a month ago that the two archrivals played a T20 World Cup match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Falaknaz told local media in the UAE that Dubai could be the ideal neutral venue for neighboring Asian giants.

United Nations criticizes ‘disturbing’ arrest of Khurram Parvez in IIOJK

UN and rights groups have expressed concern over the arrest of an activist Khurram Parvez in Indian-occupied Kashmir accused of terrorism funding. Khurram Parvez was arrested on Monday by the Indian Federal National Investigation Agency (NIA) on terror funding charges. His residence and office were searched, and a mobile phone, laptop, and books were seized.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced the opening of OXAGON. The largest floating industrial complex and the first fully integrated port and supply chain environment in the world. It is located in NEOM, a $500 billion megacity planned for northwestern Saudi Arabia. Due to the Suez Canal’s proximity, it offers excellent maritime, road, air, and high-speed rail connections. 

Pakistan scores 10 gold medals in MWSC inter-school coastal rowing beach sprint 2021

Pakistan’s students won 10 gold, four silver, and one bronze medal in MWSC inter-school coastal rowing beach sprint 2021. The second inter-school Coastal Rowing Beach Sprint Regatta was held on Sunday in Addu City, Maldives. Participants included 185 students from five schools as well as athletes from four clubs, including teams from Pakistan, Maldives, and Thailand.
