A young engineer from Karachi, Muhammad Ali Abbas has developed a robot to help children with autism improve their abilities and help them learn by overcoming loneliness through communication. Abbas is a graduate of the Usman Institute of Technology and his robot has recently been named the best creative idea in the healthcare sector. Abbas’s robot is named Peeko.

Disputed Islands of Karachi declared ‘protected forests’ by Sindh

Sindh government has declared two islands off the coast of Karachi “protected forests” while instructing its wildlife department to notify the decision. The proclamation was made against the backdrop of an ownership dispute on Bundal and Buddo islands between the federal and provincial authorities. Sindh Governor Imran Ismail announced in October 2020 the federal government was interested in developing new cities over the islands.

Karachi sees considerable decrease in crime rate, ranking improves on World Crime Index

Karachi has seen a considerable decrease in its crime rate over the years as the city fell to the 115th spot in latest World Crime Index rankings. The port city was ranked sixth in 2014 and gradually, over the years, it fell down to 103 in 2020 as crime saw a decline. The city’s current crime index has been calculated to 53.70 in the list that features over 300 cities.

International animal rights group offers to end plight of caged elephants in Karachi

An international animal rights group, the Pro Elephant Network, has written an appeal for emergency medical assistance for African elephants caged at Safari Park, and Karachi Zoo. Earlier this month, a number of activists highlighted the dire condition of four elephants, Noor Jehan, Madhu Bala, Malika and Sonu. The animals were suffering from multiple injuries on their feet and other parts of their bodies.

Two young boys from Karachi recycle plumbing pipes into creative lamps

Two young brother from Karachi, Mustafa Haroon and Moosa Haroon, have given an important lesson of recycling to the nation, through their creativity with plumbing pipes. Moosa, 12, and Mustafa, 11, have filled their room with DIY projects such as lamps, robots, dinosaurs, warriors and other strange instruments, all put together using plumbing pipes. The boys learned the art through YouTube tutorials.

Karachi Circular Railway to restart operations next week after being shut down for two decades

Pakistan Railways announced yesterday that the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) service is set to be resumed on 16 November 2020. The restoration of the service has been underway since 2017 and will end its two-decade-long hiatus since 1999. Eight passenger trains will traverse the 60-kilometer route daily at a maximum fare of Rs. 50. The restoration process of the KCR will be in phases.

Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub, has the worst rated public transport in the world, according to a report by internationally acclaimed magazine Bloomberg. The magazine’s report states that the corruption, mismanagement, and clashes of interest seized all positive momentum in the development of the city in the late 1990s. The condition of the roads, the enforcement, and the abidance of rules are all in a terrible state.
