Islamabad police to introduce body worn cameras

Islamabad Capital Territory Police has decided to use body-worn cameras at checkpoints in the capital for enhanced security and better implementation of law and order. The capital Police has arranged 20 cameras to start with and the footage will be connected to the Safe City Project.The initiative is a pilot project to test the performance of these cameras and are sponsored by JS bank. 

WhatsApp will stop working for several smartphones from 2020

The popular messaging app, Whatsapp will stop working for many smartphones around the globe from 2020. It will stop operating on Windows smartphones by the end of this month as well as on Android and iPhone devices in the coming months. Android version 2.3.4 and older users will be unable to continue using using the app whereas iPhone users with iOS 8 will be unable to create new accounts or verify the existing one. 

Google wants people with down syndrome to help improve voice recognition

Google, the search engine giant has asked people with Down syndrome (DS) to submit voice recordings in its latest attempt to increase accessibility. This is in order to train its voice-recognition AI to understand unique speech patterns of the DS patients as it can be slightly inconvenient for them to use. In order to remedy that,  Google has partnered with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society so that it can acquire voice recordings from hundreds of people.

PTCL goes solar to conserve energy for a green Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has initiated a project to install the latest solar power systems in its attempt to support the Clean & Green Pakistan initiative. Under this initiative, more than 700 PTCL facilities have been converted to solar power across Pakistan. As part of expanding the solar footprint to larger installations, a 180KW solar system is deployed at PTCL Headquarters that will help conserve energy and support environmental preservation.   

World’s first commercial electric air plane completes test flight

World’s first fully-electric commercial aircraft, 1946 Havilland DHC-2 Beaver has completed a short but successful test flight. The Canadian seaplane airline company, Harbour Air, successfully tested the e-plane fitted with an electric motor that was supplied by the American firm magniX. The aircraft is now dubbed the “e-Beaver” after the successful flight. Harbour Air believes that e-planes will go into full commercial service in 2022.

Islamabad to get a smart traffic signal system

The Islamabad Traffic Police is working on installing a smart signal system at the Kashmir Highway and replacing the conventional traffic signals in order to manage and monitor the city in a better way. In the first phase, the smart system will be installed at signals from G-7 to G-11 Kashmir Highway including the junction of Kashmir Highway at 7th Avenue, G-9, G-10, H-11 and G-11

Islamophobic content meets “community standards”: Facebook

Facebook says that Islamophobic posts distributed through a clandestine network of far-right pages meet its “community standards”. It was alleged that an Israel-based group had gained access to at least 21 far-right Facebook pages to hate targeting Muslims. Despite revelations that the pages are part of a coordinated scheme profiting from hate and disinformation, Facebook told users that the posts were acceptable.

Ford to use coffee bean waste to make auto parts

Ford Motor Company, the US-based automotive behemoth has come up with a novel idea to utilise coffee waste to make auto parts. The automaker will collaborate with the international fast-food chain McDonalds and process coffee beans as it can be transformed into a highly durable material that can be used in automobile parts. 

World’s first “Fly and Drive” car is here

The world’s first ‘fly and drive car’ made its debut in the US at Miami, Florida on Tuesday night. It is aptly named the Pioneer Personal Air Landing Vehicle, or PAL-V, and comes with a retractable overhead and rear propellers and reaches at an altitude as high as 12,500 feet. It costs  $599,000 and to date Dutch company behind it has received 70 pre-orders. 

Apple buys world’s first carbon free aluminium for its devices

Apple Inc has placed an order for the first ever batch of commercially available carbon free aluminium ever made. The aluminium is being made by a new Montreal-based company called Elyxis i.e. the joint venture between two of the biggest aluminium suppliers in the world. Apple makes extensive use of machined aluminium in most of its devices including Macbooks, iPhones, Apple Watches etc. for a premium quality feel.
