Students develop a device that helps blind people read and write messages

Students from the Applied Physics Department of the University of Karachi have developed a machine called ‘Braille Display,’ which lets blind people send and read text messages. According to a student, they’ve been working on this project for over one year and at the moment the device can only process four-letter words but they are working to improve the technology.

Online retailer slapped Rs 50,000 fine for faulty product

A consumer court on Satur­day imposed fines on a leading online retailer for providing a faulty product to a customer. Dania Kashif, the customer  filed a complaint against Daraz.pk and contended that she ordered one Play-Doh DohVinci from the website, but the product was dry and in bad condition and the price mentioned on the box was Rs6,730 instead of Rs7,795. 

Islamabad Excise dept launches online token tax payment service

The Department of Excise and Taxation has  established an online system that will allow people to pay token taxes for vehicles registered with the Excise and Taxation Office (ETO) in Islamabad. Now, people will not have to visit the Excise office physically and can pay tax online which will be received by all branches of the National Bank of Pakistan.

Nadra launches online registration facility for ID card

National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched the online registration facility for ID cards. The new initiative from NADRA will let people register themselves in the country’s database from the comfort of their homes by filling in a few details on NADRA website.. The fee of online registration for an Identity card is PKR 560 for normal card and PKR 750 for the smart card.

World’s first robot police dog launched to fight crime

The most recent addition to Police’s arsenal is a robot dog that serves as a mobile remote observation device. Massachusetts State Police in the US is secretly testing Boston Dynamics’ Spot to assess its usability for fighting crime. According to the agreement details, the robot is not armed, however, it can serve useful purposes like discovering hiding places of suspects, probe suspicious packages, and investigate crime scenes.

Israeli spyware infects millions of users, govt officials discard Whatsapp

Government officials have been advised by federal Ministry of Information Technology to discard Whatsapp for official correspondence after an Israeli spyware infected millions of users. The spyware, Pegasus, gives access to “hostile intelligence” agencies of users’ activities and sensitive data. According to experts, Pakistani mobile users could be in double jeopardy as Indian government is also reportedly using Pegasus to steal data.

Russians make cows wear VR glasses to increase milk production

Cows in RusMoloko dairy farm, Russia wear specially designed VR headsets for improved milk productivity. The glasses offer sun-filled views of green grazing fields to help the cows relax which has a direct link to a cow’s milk-producing ability. After experts in the field of technology and dairy farming  worked together to find a solution to the issue of milk production came up with perfect-fit VR goggles as a solution. 

Faisalabad airport is getting self check-in kiosks

In a bid to upgrade the facilities at Faisalabad International Airport, the administration is in the process of installing self-check-in kiosks to facilitate the passengers. The kiosk applications are being installed in both domestic and international halls to save passengers’ time and effort. Using the kiosk, you will be able to identify yourself with your passport or ID, confirm flight information, review seat arrangments, print boarding passes. 

Toshiba devises an affordable test to diagnose cancer

Toshiba, under its new five-year business strategy, has developed a technology that uses microRNA molecules in the blood to detect cancer. The company has come up with a new technology that can detect 13 different types of cancer with 99 percent accuracy in less than 2 hours. Using a chip and a small device to conduct the diagnosis and it will cost $180 per test that can be used to efficiently detect different kinds of cancer cells.
