Dr Omar Atiq, a Pakistani oncologist who lives in the US, has made headlines for wiping away $650,000 in debt for patients at his cancer treatment centre in Arkansas. Dr Atiq told his 200 patients of the news in a Christmas greeting card. The clinic shut down in late February after 29 years of service. The card also announced its closure.
The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has decided to reconstruct a Hindu temple that was set ablaze and vandalized by a mob in the Teri area of the district of Karak. The Karak Hindu temple was burned by a mob last Wednesday, comprising youngsters, elders, and children, drawing criticism from human rights activists and religious minorities.
United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) stated that 14,161 babies are expected to be born in Pakistan on New Year’s Day. According to a UNICEF report, 371,504 children are expected to be born worldwide on the first day of 2021, of which 3.8% will be born in Pakistan. Globally, half of all births will be in 10 countries, with Pakistan in fourth place.

Pakistan has further improved its position on the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) in 2019 due to the ongoing counter-terrorism operations. According to GTI 2020 report, Pakistan has dropped two places to 7th in 2019 from 5th in 2018 on the GTI, indicating a significant improvement in the overall security situation of the country. The Punjab government has removed Umar Sheikh from the post of Lahore Capital City Police Officer. Sheikh has been replaced with Ghulam Mehmood Dogar, who has served as a police officer for 14 years, including as the Lahore DIG operations and Lahore chief traffic office. Dogar, who hails from Sialkot, is counted among some of the most professional, able and responsible police officers in Pakistan.
Pakistan Television (PTV) has reportedly made a profit of a whooping Rs.42 crore from the Urdu dubbed broadcast of the Turkish series, Dirilis Ertugrul. The state-run television had telecast the show on the recommendations of Prime Minister Imran Khan. The show which began its broadcast in April-May this year broke all popularity records in Pakistan.
Pakistani ambassador to Germany, Dr Mohammad Faisal has revealed that he had met Dieter Mettke from the multinational IKEA conglomerate who was en route to Pakistan to start IKEA operations there. Dieter Mettke will be in charge of IKEA operations in the country. “We look forward to #IKEA opening up stores in major cities of #Pakistan,” Ambassador Faisal said on Twitter.
The latest disovered variant of the coronavirus does not appear to cause more severe illness than other variants, according to a matched study by Public Health England. Scientists say the new variant can spread more rapidly. According to the study, there was no significant difference in the likelihood of reinfection with the new variant as compared with the other variants.
