Hockey Olympian banned for 10 years for using ‘abusive language’ against PM Khan

Hockey Olympian Rashid-ul-Hasan was shockingly banned by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) for ten years for his apparent use of abusive language against the country’s Prime Minister. Rashid had reportedly offensively criticized the decline of the country’s hockey on a social media platform. The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games gold medallist, has however categorically denyied the allegations of using offensive language.

Ban on co-education in Punjab: minister makes clarification

News of ban on co-education in BS (Hons) degree programs in private colleges in Punjab had been making rounds on social media. However, focal Person to Chief Minister (CM) Punjab on Digital Media, Azhar Mashwani, has termed the news completely fake. Mashwani shared screenshots of the reports which claimed that the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) has notified a ban on co-education and debunked them.

Textile exports to surge all-time high as rivals lose orders to Pakistan

Pakistan’s textile exports are poised to surge 40% from last year to a record $21 billion in the 12 months ending June, as the country gained an edge over South Asian rivals during pandemic. According to Abdul Razak Dawood, commerce adviser to PM Imran Khan, the figure would expand to $26 billion in the next fiscal year, surpassing the nation’s total exports last year.

1.23mn doses of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine reach Pakistan

Pakistan has received about 1.23 million doses of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine today which were procured under the COVAX programme. So far about 10.19 million doses of different vaccines (Sinopharm, Sinovac and CanSino) had reached Pakistan. Out of the 3.5 million Sinovac Covid-19 jabs, one million would reach Pakistan on May 9 whereas another consignment of a million doses would reach the country between May 13-15.

Pakistan, Gulf countries resume free-trade talks after a 13-year gap

After a gap of 13 years, Pakistan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Wednesday resumed negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA), a top Pakistani diplomat in Riyadh said. The intention to resume the talks was declared during Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Islamabad in 2019, but they were further delayed by the coronavirus outbreak.

With more than 5000 patients on oxygen and dangerous Covid variants in Sindh, Pakistan faces a major threat

The number of critical Covid-19 patients on oxygen has reached 5,360 the previous day. “This is 57% more than during the peak last June,” Asad Umar said in series of tweets. Meanwhile, Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho revealed that the South African and Brazilian variants of the novel coronavirus disease have been found in samples taken by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).

Pakistan drops to the 90th rank in Inclusive Internet Index

Pakistan continues to slide on “Inclusive Internet Index” to drop to 90th rank among 120 countries, according to a global report for the year 2021. Pakistan not only remained the lowest in South Asia, but also lags behind other regional states, like Iran. The index includes overall score based on the scores of the “Availability, Affordability, Relevance and Readiness categories”.
