Australian authorities returns smuggled bronze age stone to Pakistan

The Australian government returned a bronze age stone weight to Pakistan that originates in Balochistan and dates back to the 3rd millennium BCE. The first cultural heritage object stolen from Pakistan and smuggled to Australia has been returned under the UNESCO Convention. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhry, Pakistan’s High Commissioner, accepted the weight at a ceremony attended by senior representatives from the Australian Office of the Arts.

The object was illegally smuggled out of Pakistan after it was illegally excavated. This item was purchased online by an Australian resident from a seller in the United States. It was imported into Australia in July 2020.
