The United States is the world’s biggest generator of plastic waste. The country urgently needs a strategy for curbing the vast amounts of plastic that end up in the oceans. The amount of plastic waste discarded worldwide each year is estimated at 242 million megatons. This is approximately the same amount as ten billion statues of liberty.
The US contributes more than one-sixth of this total plastic pollution. According to the report, low-cost, versatile plastics have created “a global scale waste deluge everywhere”. The US is one of the leading contributors to disposable plastics that end up entangled. This harms marine life, ecosystems, and brings harmful pollution up the food chain.
