Portable ventilator developed by AKU scientists receives US patent

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent to a portable ventilator developed at Aga Khan University (AKU). Pakistani doctors, biomedical engineers, and software developers developed the briefcase-size and low-cost ventilator at the university hospital’s first hackathon. A Resuscitation Automation Device aims to bridge the gap between manual Ambu bags.

Manual Ambu-bags can be unreliable, expensive, and take a long time to operate. Due to the RAD’s compact size, patients who are moderately ill can potentially receive care while on the way to the hospital. A critical patient can also be placed on the RAD while awaiting the availability of a ventilator. Furthermore, doctors can monitor patients remotely using a mobile application.
