Russia to invest $8 billion in Pakistan after resolving 40 year old trade dispute

Pakistan and Russia have finally agreed to settle a 4-decade old trade dispute, with the latter agreeing to invest $8 billion. Sindh High Court dismissed the previous case as the involved parties reached an out of court agreement, paving the way for the agreement to be officially signed. Under the agreement, Russia and Pakistan will get the pending payments and Russia will go ahead with its plan of investing $8 billion in different energy projects and Pakistan Steel Mills.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to win big at Martial Arts Championship

Muhammad Abubakr Farooq, hailing from Chakwal, Pakistan has recently created history at the Martial Arts Championship by becoming the youngest British-Pakistani to bag three medals.. The 8 year old won medals in different categories, bronze in self defence, silver in fighting and gold in weapons. He believes this would not have been possible for him without his parents and trainer’s support. According to his father, Abubakr is a inspiration for all the kids. 

Vaping devices may damage the heart, study says

Vaping devices and the chemicals they deliver — increasingly popular among teens — may damage the cardiovascular system, a study said on Thursday, adding to a growing chorus of concern over injury and deaths related to e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes also contain nicotine that is also found in tobacco, is known to increase blood pressure and the heart rate.  

PTA issues guidelines to report misplaced and stolen phones

Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has issued a guideline in a newspaper to report or block misplaced and stolen phones. PTA has urged the public to report as soon as possible because of the possible misuse of the phone. After reporting mobile phone will be blocked within 16 hours’ time period. While lodging complaint at the helpline 0800-256225, emailing at [email protected] or by visiting PTA headquarters few things will be provided like all IMEIs of mobile phone, number etc. 

SECP’s startup portal encourages technology innovation in Pakistan

Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has launched a new startup portal to encourage technology innovation in the country. The startup was inaugurated by SECP Information System and Technology Commissioner Shauzeb Ali at  ‘Startup Grind Pakistan’ conference in Islamabad and includes features like startups, access to mentors and incubation centres, simplified user experience for registration for startup companies and guides with video tutorials for starters.

‘Pakistan Army has nothing to do with politics’: DG ISPR

As controversy regarding military’s role in Pakistan increases, DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor has said that “marches and dharnas are a political activity and the Pakistan Army, as a state institution, has nothing to do with politics”. In a television interview, he said that Pakistan Army had supported the then democratic government during the dharna staged by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2014.

UAE mulls removing ban on Whatsapp calls

After years of banning Voice over IP (VoIP) calls like Whatsapp, Skype and FaceTime, the UAE government is finally going to consider removing the ban on Whatsapp calls. The country has increased its collaboration with the Facebook-owned WhatsApp and will work keeping in mind the national security initiatives. UAE’s NESA Executive Director, Mohamed Al Kuwaiti revealed the news, saying, “this is going to happen soon.”

Jemima Goldsmith, former wife of Prime Minister Imran Khan, hilariously responded to Mufti Kifayatullah, cleric of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), who has claimed that her cousin ‘Wiki’ founded WikiLeaks — a non-profit organisation that publishes news leaks by anonymous sources. During an interview with a private TV channel, Kifayatullah had claimed that Jemima’s first cousin named ‘Wiki’ is the actual mastermind behind WikiLeaks.

High level of smog in Lahore forces closure of schools

After a sudden spike in Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) from less than 200 to more than 500 late, the chief minister announced closure of public and private schools on Thursday. This is the first time that smog has forced closure of schools. As per Lahore US consulate Air Quality Monitor feed, the level of smog was hazardous and at 10pm, Lahore’s AQI was PM2.5 – 580.

India Pakistan Davis Cup tie in Islamabad moved to a neutral venue

International Tennis Federation’s independent security advisors have advised against playing India’s Davis Cup tie against Pakistan in Islamabad this month and suggested the tie must be played at a ‘neutral’ venue. The Asia/Oceania Group I tie, originally scheduled for September 14-15 in Islamabad, was postponed by the ITF to Nov 29-30 following a security review amid political tensions between the neighbours.
