Social media erupts in anger as India renames famous poet Akbar Allahabadi as Akbar Prayagraj

Netizens have been outraged by the Indian government’s decision to change the name of the famous Muslim poet Akbar Allahabadi. UP Higher Education Services Commission (UPHESC), an autonomous bureau of the state government, has now renamed the poet Akbar Prayagraj. UPHESC’s website has updated the “About Allahabad” section of the website with the name Akbar Prayagraj.

In 2018, the extreme government of Yogi Adityanath renamed Allahabad district Prayagraj. All such writers and poets who used the suffix “Allahabadi” on their names have had their names changed to “Prayagraj” on the UPHESC website.
