Ex-Pakistani singer Adnan Sami Receives Indian Padma Shri Award

Adnan Sami received the fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri award for his contribution to the field of performing arts. Pakistani-born Adnan Sami became an Indian citizen in 2016. The award was widely criticized when it was announced in January, with the Nationalist Congress Party calling it an “insult to 130 crore Indians.”

Sami took to Twitter after Jaiveer Shergill, a politician from the Congress party, called singer’s Padma honor ‘chamchagiri’. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind presented him with the award at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
