Pakistani startup raises pre-seed funding of $320,000 to launch app for exam preparation

Edkasa, a Lahore-based education technology startup has managed to raise pre-seed funding of $320,000 to help launch a new mobile application for exam preparation. The new app will leverage and make use of Edkasa’s existing userbase of 55,000 students and more than 40 schools throughout Pakistan which currently avail its services, according to a statement from the startup.

Tesla cars can now be bought with Bitcoin, reveals Elon Musk

Tesla customers can now buy their cars with Bitcoin, company chief Elon Musk has revealed in a Tweet. Mr Musk, a well known Bitcoin enthusiast, has invested heavily in the digital currency and bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin last month. Bitcoin, the world’s biggest digital currency, rose more than four per cent after Musk’s tweet and was last trading at $56,429.

15-year-old Pakistani app developer creates ‘advanced’ version of WhatsApp

Amid widespread concern regarding WhatsApp’s new privacy policy, 15-year-old Pakistani app developer Nabeel Haider has developed an alternative instant messaging app that he claims works even better. Haider hails from Karachi and has a keen interest in app development. The application, called FF Meeting (family & friends meeting), is already available on the Google Play Store.

World’s first space hotel plans to open for business by 2027

Construction is due to begin on the world’s first ‘space hotel’ in low Earth orbit in 2025. The Voyager Station will come equipped with restaurants, a cinema, spa and rooms for 400 people and is expected to open for business by 2027. Developed by the Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC), the station’s infrastructure will be built in orbit around the Earth.

Bazaar, Pakistan’s online marketplace raises $6.5 mln seed round, second largest in MENA

Bazaar, a Pakistani online marketplace that connects retailers directly to wholesalers and manufacturers, has raised a $6.5 million seed round, the second largest ever in the Middle East and North Africa region and the largest in Pakistan, one of the venture capital firms that invested in the project said. Last year, Bazaar raised $1.3 million in Pakistan’s largest ever pre-seed round.

WhatsApp update forces users to share data with Facebook for continued usage of app

WhatsApp users are receiving an in-app notice regarding the service’s new terms and privacy policy. Among the updates, the messaging service has updated its terms regarding the data of users. These changes will go into effect on February 8th, and users will have no choice but to accept these changes if they wish to continue using WhatsApp.

60-foot Gundam Robot in Japan has now entered testing mode

An upcoming amusement park Gundam Factory Yokohama in Japan has created an 18-meter (60-foot) life-sized replica of the RX-78 mecha (crewed) Gundam robot from various anime TV series and manga. Back in July, the robot took its first tentative steps along the road to being fully functional. During that test it appears no weight was put on the legs of the robot, which has now been rectified in a new test.

A remote-controlled car race on the lunar surface is due to take place in 2021

A remotely-controlled car race will now be held on the Moon in 2021, reports New Atlas. Moon Mark, a multimedia and education content company in collaboration with Intuitive Machines, the global leader in commercial space and airborne systems are pulling in some extraordinary resources to plan the race. The two racecars will be partially designed by high school kids, and McLaren P1 designer Frank Stephenson.

Internet giants threaten to leave Pakistan under the new social media rules

Leading tech companies may be unable to operate in Pakistan under the country’s new social media rules, Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) said in a statement. The rules notified by the government, require social media companies to block access to unlawful online content within 24 hours — or in emergency cases, within six hours — after being reported by a government authority.
