Pakistani-born US physician makes history by implanting a gene-edited pig heart in human

Pakistani-born doctor working at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has made a landmark medical discovery. Dr. Mohiuddin transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a terminally ill patient. They implanted the heart of a pig that was genetically modified and bred to save human lives. Bennett is the first person ever to receive a pig heart transplant.

Former Karachi citizen Dr. Mansoor Mohiuddin has spent the past three decades trying to save terminally ill patients needing a heart transplant. During a previously attempted transplant, a chimpanzee’s heart was implanted, but the patient did not survive.
