The US military confessed to killing 10 civilians and targeting the wrong vehicle. A Pentagon review revealed Friday that only civilians were killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan last month. The Pentagon had defended the attack last month, claiming Islamic State extremists were killed. The top general in the US Central Command, General Frank McKenzie, announced it at the Pentagon.
McKenzie apologized for the tragedy, saying it was a mistake that killed seven children. “This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake and I offer my sincere apology,” he said. In a statement, McKenzie said he is “fully responsible for this strike and this tragic outcome.”
