Pakistan, China jointly developed high production hybrid rice varieties using artificial intelligence, big data, 5G and remote sensing to boost Pakistani rice exports. The rice varieties were developed in Hubei Province at the joint Wuhan-Punjab University research center. Honglian rice is one of three main types of cytoplasmic male sterility in rice commercially used to produce hybrid seeds.
Honglian rice has grown to an area of over 30 million acres worldwide by 2021. Wuhan University and the University of Punjab established a cooperative relationship in 2019 to develop Honglian rice in Pakistan. In the last two years, Honglian hybrid rice plots in Pakistan’s main rice growing regions have demonstrated promising yields.
