Pakistan and Afghanistan discuss expanding CPEC to enhance regional connectivity and trade

In an effort to enhance regional connectivity and trade, Pakistan and Afghanistan have discussed extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project. Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Mansoor Ahmed Khan, said that regional connectivity would enable Pakistan to improve its economic relationship with Kabul. CPEC offers opportunities for infrastructure and energy connectivity between Afghanistan and Pakistan. This will help connect Southeast Asia to Central Asia.

CPEC is one of the cornerstones of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, under which Beijing has committed to investing over $60 billion for infrastructure projects in Pakistan, primarily through loans. Khan said talks had taken place with the Taliban-led administration on this and other ways for the country to develop its economy.
