A street fruit vendor’s daughter won a gold medal

A  fruit vendor’s daughter, Noor ul Sabah hailing from Faislabad has won a gold medal for her excellent academic performance. Noor’s father Abdul Ghafoor is a fruit vendor and said that his daughter is a bright student and he helped her as much as he could. Noor added that her parents have faced a lot of hardships yet still they helped her in completing her education. 

China honored Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman with the highest scientific award

A renowned Pakistani scientist Atta-Ur-Rehman had been honored with the International China Science and Technology Cooperation award on 7th January. Dr. Rehman is the first Pakistani scientist to have received this award. Before this, the awardees include Japan, UK, India, and the USA, etc. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, is one of the most state-of-the-art scientists of Pakistan. 

HEC launches online degree verification service

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is launching an online service for verifying educational documents. HEC will maintain and supervise an online system where all degree awarding institutions automatically submit copies of issued degrees online as soon as the degrees are awarded. Citizens will have online access to their digitally verifiable degrees and results and it will also online verify on a publicly shareable tiny-URL. 

Allama Iqbal Open University offers free education to prisoners

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) remains the only public sector university that has been offering free education to prisoners since the 1990s. AIOU provides free admission forms to the prisoners who want to enroll in the program. During their jail time, prisoners are exempted from registration, admission, tuition, examination, and degree fee. AIOU has been offering education to prisoners from Matric to Bachelors levels since 2016. 

Govt to reform CSS exams, will reduce age limit by 2 years

Th federal government is planning to reform the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination process. The government has decided to slash the upper age limit for CSS examination by 2 years decreasing it from 30 to 28 years. Moreover,the special quota for candidates hailing from underdeveloped parts of the country in will be eliminated judging all candidates equally by using percentile system.

Government reduces fuel prices for December

The federal government has slashed the price of petroleum products up to 3.4 per cent “to provide relief to the consumers”. According to an official, the new prices will come into effect from Sunday, December 1, 2019. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) had recommended to reduce price of Light Diesel Oil around Rs 2.9 per litre and a nominal reduction in the prices of petrol by Rs0.25 or 0.2 per cent. 

US to increase educational opportunities for Pakistani students

According to Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Lisa K. Heller, the Trump administration will increase its support for educational opportunities and student exchange programs for Pakistani students of different backgrounds. The US embassy, in collaboration with Education USA, organized International Education Week (IEW) from November 18th to 22nd to encourage Pakistani youngsters to study in the US.

Pakistani professor wins International Technology Innovation Award

Syed Ahmed Chan Bukhari, a US-based Pakistani professor, has been presented the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s (IEEE) Technology Innovation Award for his work in the standardization of biomedical data. Syed Ahmed Chan hails from Gujrat,Pakistan and is currently serving as Program Director Healthcare Informatics at the Saint John’s University of New York and has also served in prestigious universities like Yale and Stanford. 

Pakistani engineering degrees are now accepted worldwide

As Pakistan is now a permanent member of the Washington Accord, engineering degrees issued by local higher education institutions are now accepted worldwide. According to the former chairperson of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) Engr. Rukhsana Zuberi Rukhsana Zuberi, PEC has worked hard to gain this membership which will allow Pakistani engineers to get jobs and admissions around the world without any additional qualifications.

HEC is working on a commercial policy to make universities self-sufficient

The government is working on a commercial policy for universities to make them self-sufficient, disclosed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Science and Technology.  The committee was briefed on the financial constraints faced by COMSATS and other universities as well as problems being faced by the administration and students due to the shortage of funds, and on virtual campus regulations such as decrease in salary as well as student scholarship budget.
