Finland’s Sanna Marin becomes world’s youngest prime minister

Sanna Marin, Finland’s 34-year-old Minister of Transport and Communications, is all set to take the oath as the world’s youngest prime minister. Following the resignation of PM Antti Rinne, the Social Democratic Party of Finland picked Sanna Marin as the third female prime minister of their country. Marin started her political career from the grassroots level at the age of 27. 

Failure to implement decision to allow heavy bikes on motorways

Motorcyclists with heavy bikes were given permission to use the motorways in April after the Islamabad High Court had given them the green signal however the decision hasn’t been implemented yet. During the hearing of a case on Monday, the court gave both the National Highway and Motorways Police till December 15 to carry out the verdict. Justice The bikers have been given the go-ahead to drive on motorways, according to  Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani. 

Saudi Arabia to no longer segregate women and men in restaurants

Saudi Arabia will no longer be segregating men and women at restaurants, uplifting decades of conservative restrictions.  Women in Saudi were compelled to use separate entrances from men or sit behind partitions at restaurants. The decision, which essentially erodes one of the most visible gender segregation restrictions in place, was quietly announced on Sunday by the Municipal and Rural Affairs Ministry.

PM Imran to receive Bahrain’s highest civil award

Prime Minister Imran Khan will receive Bahrain’s highest civil award, the King Hamad Order of the Renaissance, revealed Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfiqar Bukhari. “Prime Minister is going on an official visit to Bahrain in mid-December where he will be conferred Bahrain’s highest civilian award,” the publication quoted Bukhari in a report published on Saturday. 

Provinces forego welfare funds, return Rs202bn to Centre

The four provinces jointly provided a whopping cash surplus of Rs202 billion to the Centre during the first quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal year to help meet its fiscal targets committed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The provinces did not utilise more than one-fourth of the funds for the welfare of their citizens made available to them under their total revenue.

Pakistani manpower export to Saudi Arabia up by 207%

Manpower export from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia has recorded a significant increase of 207% during the first 10 months of 2019  as compared to last year. According to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, more than 258,215 Pakistanis travelled to Saudi Arabia in search of employment in different sectors while only 84,091 went to Saudi Arabia looking for different opportunities. 

Ford to use coffee bean waste to make auto parts

Ford Motor Company, the US-based automotive behemoth has come up with a novel idea to utilise coffee waste to make auto parts. The automaker will collaborate with the international fast-food chain McDonalds and process coffee beans as it can be transformed into a highly durable material that can be used in automobile parts. 

World’s first “Fly and Drive” car is here

The world’s first ‘fly and drive car’ made its debut in the US at Miami, Florida on Tuesday night. It is aptly named the Pioneer Personal Air Landing Vehicle, or PAL-V, and comes with a retractable overhead and rear propellers and reaches at an altitude as high as 12,500 feet. It costs  $599,000 and to date Dutch company behind it has received 70 pre-orders. 

Rupee makes gains against dollar

The rupee posted moderate gains in both the currency markets against dollar during the outgoing week, boosted by strong foreign inflows and  positive macroeconomic indicators. The rupee closed at 155.28 against the greenback on Monday and closed at 155.06 on Friday while in the open market the rupee gained 25 paisad to close at 155.10 against the dollar. 

Apple buys world’s first carbon free aluminium for its devices

Apple Inc has placed an order for the first ever batch of commercially available carbon free aluminium ever made. The aluminium is being made by a new Montreal-based company called Elyxis i.e. the joint venture between two of the biggest aluminium suppliers in the world. Apple makes extensive use of machined aluminium in most of its devices including Macbooks, iPhones, Apple Watches etc. for a premium quality feel.
