Lahore experiences 2°C temperature after 35 years

Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded temperatures as low as 2°C in Lahore, this temperature was last recorded 35 years ago. According Muhammad Riaz, Chief Meteorologist, the cold weather spell will prevail until mid-January. He also added that although climate change has some impact on weather patterns, there is nothing unusual. The coldest winter spell is witnessed from mid-December to mid-January every year. 

PIA to bring back 113 Pakistanis stranded in Malaysia

A special flight of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) carrying 113 stranded Pakistani prisoners in Malaysia is scheduled to arrive today in Islamabad. The information was shared by Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, which stated that the “boarding process” to bring back the stranded Pakistani is “in process”. The government had brought back 300 Pakistanis from Malaysia in May 2019 as well.

Indian police deploy mannequins to warn lawbreakers on road

Mannequins dressed up as traffic officers are being placed at major road intersections in India in the hope they will prompt drivers to observe the rules. With eight million cars plying the notoriously busy roads in a tech hub renowned for its traffic snarls, police say they don’t have enough officers to man all the junctions. The idea is to increase compliance, not to scare anyone, according to a city police commissioner. 

Penn Badgley accidently confirms ‘You’ will have a third season

You star Penn Badgley accidentally revealed he’ll be taking up the role of Joe Goldberg for a third season. The 33-year-old star of the Netflix drama, in which he plays a narcissistic murderer , let slip in an interview with that season three of the show is a basically a done deal. Penn clarified that he cannot speak about anything official but its going ahead unofficially. 

Bangladesh shuts mobile network along India border

Bangladesh has cut services to millions of mobile phones along its border with India for “security” reasons amid fears a new citizenship law passed by its giant neighbour could prompt an influx of migrants. Bangladesh shares a 4,000-kilometre border with India and the shutdown would affect some 10 million mobile phone users. The decision was taken keeping in mind India’s current situation which may prompt many people to enter Bangladesh. 

PTI government decides to distribute Sehat Insaf Cards to transgender community

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has decided to provide the transgender community with free medical services through the Sehat Insaf Card Program. Prime Minister PM Khan distributed the cards among the transgender persons in a special ceremony held in PM House. Under the scheme, the treatment for angioplasty, brain surgery, cancer and other diseases will be done free of cost.

PM Imran’s trip to Davos to be ‘most economical’ in last 10 years

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s trip to Davos, Switzerland next month will be most economical compared to his predecessors, the government claimed on Monday. Total expenditure of the three-day visit, in which the premier along with his delegation will attend annual World Economic Forum (WEF) summit, is estimated to be at $68,000. Previous governments spent lavishly on their visits to the Swiss city in comparison.

Twitter calls Fahad Mustafa hypocrite for slamming TikTok

Actor-host Fahad Mustafa called out the video sharing app, TikTok, after a Sialkot based 16-year-old killed himself while filming a TikTok video with his friends. In light of the tragic incident, Mustafa took to Twitter and urged parents to not let their kids use the app. However, Twitter was rather  unhappy with Fahad’s statement, owing to the insubstantial content on his controversial game show.

Chinese scientist jailed for creating gene-edited babies

Chinese scientist, He Jiankui, who claimed to be behind the world’s first gene-edited babies has been sentenced to three years in prison.  Jiankui, who shocked the scientific community last year by announcing the birth of twin girls whose genes had allegedly been altered to confer immunity to HIV, was also fined three million yuan ($430,000) for illegal medical practice.

Filmmaker Jami names Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon as alleged rapist

Jamshed Mahmood, popularly known as Jami, has named Dawn CEO Hameed Haroon as the alleged rapist who raped the filmmaker 13 years ago. Almost 3 months ago, Jami stated that a powerful ‘media tycoon’ had sexually abused him. The popular director, made the accusation in a tweet  from a new Twitter account after his previous account got hacked.
