Hub Dam at the verge of collapsing due to high water pressure, warns WAPDA

The walls of the Hub Dam are close to being breached as massive pressure is being exerted on them, warned the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The dam, which is filled to its maximum capacity due to recent torrential rains, has not been repaired for many years and meets 20% of Karachi’s and 100% of Hub’s water needs.

Mohmand Dam to be completed by December 2025

The first unit of the Mohmand Dam will start operation by December 2025, according to Water and Power Development Authority Chairperson Muzammil Hussain. After the Tarbela Dam, the Mohmand Dam is expected to be the next big water project in the country. The Mohmand Dam was the fifth highest concrete-face rock-fill dam in the world and is expected to produce 800 megawatts of electricity and will enable the storage of 1.3 million acre-feet of water. 

WAPDA breaks records for hydel power production in 2019

A record amount of hydel electricity was supplied to the national grid during the year 2019 by WAPDA. The hydel power stations owned and operated by WAPDA provided 34.678 billion units of hydel electricity – highest-ever – to the system in 2019. This quantum of generation is 6.321 billion units higher compared with last year i.e. 28.357 billion units.
