Europe looks to reopen as football resumes in Germany

Football in Germany kicked off again, becoming the first major sports league in the world to resume play, as parts of Europe took more tentative steps towards normality after the devastation unleashed by the coronavirus pandemic. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte of Italy, however, said Saturday he needed more guarantees before the government can give the green light for the resumption of its top football league. 

US comedian Fred Willard passes away aged 86

Four time Emmy award-winning comedian Fred Willard has died aged 86, his agent announced on Saturday. Willard appeared in films including “Anchorman” and “This is Spinal Tap” and TV shows such as “Modern family.” Tributes poured in for the actor, with long-time friend and fellow showbiz veteran Jamie Lee Curtis. His agent, Mike Eisenstadt, did not specify the cause of Willard’s death, nor his whereabouts at the time.

PIA domestic flights resume with higher prices

PIA resumed domestic flight operations in the country, operating two flights from Karachi to Lahore and Islamabad and one from Lahore to Karachi. Every customer that arrives at Café Rothe is given a hat to wear that consists of colourful pool noodles that stop people from closing in on each other. Cafe Rothe’s motto is: “Keep the social distance.”

Rihanna is ranked 48th in the list of Britain’s wealthiest women. The pop star made it on to the list because she’s now based in London due to the huge success of her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty. The 32-year old has been named as one of Britain’s richest women – with a fortune of £468 million, according to the latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List.

Medical professionals to get one month’s salary as bonus

The Sindh health ministry has decided to pay one month’s basic salary as a bonus to medical professionals in the province. Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) said that it suggested that government pay an extra allowance of Rs1,000 to doctors and Rs500 per day to nurses who are treating the patients of coronavirus. The decisions were taken in a meeting between Sindh Health Minister Dr Azara Pechuhu and a delegation of the PPA.

Punjab Food Authority seizes tonnes of hoarded wheat during crackdown

The Punjab Food Authority has seized thousands of tonnes of illegally stocked wheat across the province during a series of raids. The authority seized 10,000 wheat bags from Dera Ghazi Khan, 3,000 from Bahawalnagar and 2,000 bags from Layyah. A total of 20,000 bags were also impounded from a warehouse in Multan. All the warehouses where bags were found have been shut down and their owners have been arrested.

Coronavirus may never go away, warns WHO

The World Health Organization on Wednesday warned that the novel coronavirus may never go away and become an endemic – like HIV. Also that the world must learn to live with. As the world gradually eases the stringent measures it took to stem the outbreak’s spread, the WHO says the virus may never be wiped out completely.

Rs442bn accord for construction of Diamer-Bhasha dam signed

The government signed a Rs442 billion contract with a joint venture of China Power and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) for the construction of the Diamer-Bhasha dam. Chinese state-run firm holds 70 per cent and the FWO, a commercial arm of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, 30pc share in the consortium. Signed contract covers construction of a diversion system, main dam, access bridge and the 21MW Tangir hydropower project.
