Pakistan ranked 116th out of 140 countries in freedom of press rankings

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index 2019, Pakistan has been ranked at a poor 116th place out of 140 countries in the freedom of press rankings. While the European countries are expectedly included in the top 10, countries like Jamaica, Costa Rica, and New Zealand are also rated highly. China, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Iran are all listed at the bottom.

Pakistan among countries with least solved murder cases of journalists

Pakistan, which ranks 142 on the World Press Freedom index, is among the 13 countries where journalists are murdered and their killers go free. the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) stated the killers go free due to “unchecked corruption, ineffective institutions, and lack of political will to pursue robust investigations”. Between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2019, at least 16 murder cases were found in Pakistan.
