Daughter of Uzbekistan’s late leader returns $1 billion to state

Gulnara Karimova, daughter of late Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan, was sentenced to 10 years behind bars in 2017 on charges of fraud and money-laundering. The jailed Karimova has now begged her father’s successor to release her after claiming she gave 1.2 billion dollars (one billion euros) of her “personal assets” to the state in interest of republic’s budget.

Karimova’s apparent appeal came on eve of an announcement by Swiss attorney general that Switzerland had sent 130 million Swiss francs ($133 million) to Uzbekistan formerly held in bank accounts in the European country. Karimova and her legal team had also relinquished claims to $686 million kept in foreign banks.
