Mount Merapi volcano in Indonesia erupted on Tuesday, sending a 6-km column of ash into the air and triggering the closure of the airport in the nearby city of Solo on the densely populated Java island. Indonesia’s Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation issued a red alert and said the ash cloud was moving north.
A volcano near the Philippine capital Manila spewed a massive cloud of ash into the sky on Sunday, forcing the precautionary evacuation of thousands of residents. Government seismologists recorded magma moving towards the crater of Taal, one of the country’s most active volcanoes located 65 kilometres south of Manila. According to the chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Taal’s last eruption was in 1977.
