Newborns may be infected with the coronavirus

Newborns infected with the coronavirus don’t show symptoms and can be a danger to people near them. Babies can become carriers of the virus  especially in the maternity unit of the medical facility where the baby is delivered. Neurologist Dr Shabbir Ahmed Malik asked to stay safe and warned to take extra precautions to prevent the spread of this virus in newborn babies. 

Wuhan, China lifts coronavirus lockdown

Wuhan, China lifted months long coronavirus lockdown in the city on Wednesday. Thousands of people crowded airports and subway stations in the city. The government had lifted the travel ban from the city after 76 days. Buses and cars were also on roads out of the city, after barricades on its outskirts were dismantled. 

Miss England 2019 is hanging up her crown to fight Covid-19

A junior doctor, Miss England 2019, Bhasha Mukherjee, is trading in her crown to fight Covid-19 being on the frontlines as an NHS doctor. The 24-year old had put her medical career on hold so that she could travel the world for humanitarian efforts. Now, she thinks wearing the crown does not feel right when her colleagues were risking their lives treating coronavirus patients back home in England. 

WhatsApp tightens message forwarding to slow spread of coronavirus misinformation

WhatsApp has tightened its message forwarding limits to slow the spread of misinformation regarding the novel coronavirus. It has restricted users to share forwarded content to one chat at a time.  The pandemic has been accompanied by what the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called an “infodemic” of misinformation, prompting governments to urge social media companies to do more to combat the problem.

J.K. Rowling fully recovered from coronavirus symptoms

The author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling said on Monday she had recovered from a suspected case of Coronavirus after two weeks of illness. She shared a video of a breathing technique that had helped her manage her worst symptoms and had been recommended by her husband, who is a doctor in the U.K. Rowling said that she is completely recovered using the breathing technique that costs nothing. 

UK PM Johnson in intensive care with worsening coronavirus symptoms

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was fighting worsening coronavirus symptoms in an intensive care unit on Tuesday. Johnson, 55, was admitted to the the St Thomas’ Hospital after suffering persistent coronavirus symptoms, his condition rapidly deteriorated over the next 24 hours, and he was moved to an intensive care unit. Johnson’s personal battle with the virus has shaken the British government. 

UN chief urges governments to protect women amid coronavirus lockdown

United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres urged the governments to protect women during the coronavirus lockdown as the threat looms largest in their own homes. He conveyed this in a video message calling violence against women “horrifying” and advised the government to make redress and prevention of domestic violence. Guterres also called for setting up emergency warning systems in pharmacies and groceries for women to seek support without alerting their abusers. 

Deepak Perwani designs protective bodysuits for Pakistani medics

Deepak Perwani designed prototypes of protective bodysuits in a bid to help Pakistani healthcare professionals contain the pandemic. The designer took it to twitter, calling his prototype washable, reusable and disposable. The prototypes are awaiting approval from authorities. Earlier, Asim Jofa prepared similar protective gear to dress healthcare professionals. The self-protection suits and masks would be distributed free of cost, according to the designer.

World’s largest jazz festival in Montreal cancelled due to pandemic

This year’s Montreal Jazz Festival, the world’s largest, and other popular summer jamborees in Canada’s francophone metropolis were cancelled Friday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was scheduled to start on June 25. The Jazz Festival’s general manager Jacques Primeau mentioned in a statement that the decision to cancel the festival was not an easy one but it had become necessary to protect the public as well as the artist.

PIA halts Karachi operations after pilots suspected of contracting coronavirus

PIA stopped its flight operations from Karachi on Sunday after four pilots were suspected of contracting the coronavirus. CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik has issued immediate instructions to ground the planes. Four pilots were stopped as part of precautionary measures against the virus.The Pakistan Airline Pilots Association has stopped the pilots from flying and has called for safety measures for pilots saying that PIA has been unable to provide a safe environment.
