Former Pakistani army chief blames CIA for Zia’s plane crash

Pakistan’s former army chief General (r) Mirza Aslam Beg says the US Central intelligence agency (CIA) is responsible for the 1988 plane crash that killed then president and army chief Ziaul Haq. In an interview, Beg told Turkish Anadolu news agency that the plane crash was not an accident, but sabotage. An internal inquiry conducted by the military intelligence also raised suspicion about the role of the CIA in the plane crash.

FIA arrests Pakistani bookies working with Indians over PSL

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a case against five bookies with Indian connections via Dubai as it cracks down on bribing cricketers for spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League. Calls and text messages were intercepted that were being exchanged between a former national cricketer and a Lahore bookie, these connections go to Dubai and India-based individuals involved in spot fixing.   

PIA suspends flight operations to China and Japan

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has discontinued its flight operations for China and Japan for at least three weeks in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. While announcing the halt of flight operations on Monday, the airline spokesperson said that the ban is a precautionary measure. The decision on whether to resume flights or extend the ban will be taken next week.

Trump offers to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir

United States President Donald Trump is willing to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir again. A day after announcing in India that his relationship with Pakistan is “very good”, Trump reiterated his support to both countries saying that he would “do whatever he can” to help prime ministers Imran Khan and Narendra Modi as his relationship with both “gentlemen” was good.

Islamabad traffic police has no working speed cameras in the city

Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has lack of working speed cameras in the city due to which they have been unable to monitor any speed limit violations. This has led to multiple fatalities due to road accidents each year. Speed monitoring cameras were set up at various locations across the city for the ITP to monitor both speed and lane violations but unfortunately, it failed to do so.  

Khalid Javed declines to represent government in Justice Isa case

Barrister Khalid Javed Khan, the newly appointed attorney-general, has excused himself from representing the federal government in the presidential reference against Supreme Court Judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa. During hearing of the case on Monday, Khan said he cannot personally represent the government. The court then adjourned the hearing and told the government to bring a new lawyer who can represent them in the case.

Pakistanis can now get Saudi Arabia visit visas on arrival

Saudi Arabia has introduced multiple entry visas for Pakistanis and all other applicants who have a valid UK, US or Schengen visa stamped on their passport. Umrah can also be performed on this visa. The visa will be valid for a year. Visitors, however, aren’t allowed to perform Hajj on it. People can stay for 90 days at a stretch on this visa and enter the Kingdom multiple times.

Trump “unintentionally” makes fun of Tendulkar & Kohli’s names

Trump, while addressing the audience in Ahmedabad, India unintentionally made fun of Tendulkar and Kohli’s names. He said that he is talking to them at a place where people cheer on some of the greatest cricketers in the world. The American President was referring to Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli as “Soo-Chin Tendulkar” and “Virot Ko-Lee”. 

Mobile phone imports increase by 80% in 7 months

The import of Mobile phones increased by 80 percent during the first seven months of the current financial year (2019-20) as compared to the corresponding period of last year. Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $760.582 million during July-January (2019-20) as compared to $423.818 million during July-January (2018-19), showing a growth of 79.46 percent.  On a month-on-month basis, the import of mobile phones witnessed an increase of 22.73 percent during January 2020, as compared to $117.682 million during December 2019.

Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan stands up for Pakistani student

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan stood up for a Pakistani student after his cousin tweeted about a bullying incident at university where he was told off for his stutter. Mariam Zulfiqar said that her cousin was giving a presentation when the lecturer told him to drop out if he had trouble speaking properly after which his confidence was shattered and refused to attend university.
