Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft’s board of directors

Microsoft’s founder and chairman Bill Gates has stepped down from the company’s board of directors for the first time in 44 years. He explains that he is stepping away from the company to focus more on his charitable endeavors such as global health, education etc. He added that he is by no means abandoning Microsoft and will maintain a passive role in the company as a leading advisor. 

Pakistani Umrah pilgrims get four days to return home

Saudi Arabia has permitted special flights to take Pakistani Umrah pilgrims back home until March 19. These special flights could take Pakistani pilgrims from the Jeddah and Madina airports, according to the Saudi aviation authority. Ferry flights from Pakistan will be able to land at these two Saudi airports. Earlier, Saudi Arabia announced suspension of all flight operations froim Pakistan for two weeks. 

Pakistan coronavirus tally reaches 53

Twenty new cases of the coronavirus were reported in Pakistan on Sunday, taking the country’s tally to 53. Five new COVID-19 cases were reported in Karachi, the Sindh health department confirmed. Thirteen others returning from Iran via Taftan tested positive for the virus in Sukkur. This brought the total number of cases in Sindh to 35, the health department said. One coronavirus case was reported in Islamabad, according to PIMS spokesperson Dr Waseem Khawaja.

People crowd PIA offices following Saudi Arabia’s 72-hour return deadline

People across the country crowded offices of the Pakistan International Airways after Saudi Arabia imposed a 72-hour deadline for iqama holders (residents) to return to the Kingdom. The decision was taken a precautionary measure after the global coronavirus outbreak. PIA was ordered by the federal government on Friday to only operate international flights from Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad.

Saudi Arabia to suspend international flights over coronavirus fears

Saudi Arabia said Saturday it would suspend international flights for two weeks in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Saudi Arabia has recorded 86 cases of the virus so far, but no deaths, according to the health ministry. The Kingdom had already halted flights to some countries and closed schools and universities as part of measures to contain the disease.

PIMS Islamabad reports new coronavirus case

One new coronavirus case was confirmed at PIMS in Islamabad on Saturday. The patient is a 30-year-old woman who has been put on the ventilator after her condition deteriorated. Earlier she was under treatment at a private hospital where she was tested for COVID-19. After her test came out positive she was referred to PIMS on Friday, said PIMS Spokesperson Dr Waseem Khwaja.

5th grade student invents navigational hat for blind people

Zuhaib Ghauri, a fifth-grade studnet from Karachi, has developed a navigational hat for blind people which helps them walk without bumping into hurdles. The child prodigy came up with this innovative idea after completing his Arduino courses. Powered by batteries, the hat uses sensors and an Arduino board to identify the hindrances in the way.

La Liga suspended as Real Madrid gets quarantined

A rapid spread of coronavirus in Europe has spurred panic among the football teams as the La Liga has been suspended for two weeks. Real Madrid players were sent in isolation after one of the city’s basketball team players contracted the virus. Though no football player at Real Madrid showed symptoms, the club shut down as a preventive measure.
