Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senator Azam Swati was taken into custody early Thursday morning by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime unit for allegedly making ‘controversial tweets’ against state institutions, including army chief. The FIA arrested Swati for “using false information” through his official Twitter handle, “which is likely to incite any Officer, Soldier, Sailor, or Airman in the Army, Navy or Air Force to mutiny”.

The Islamabad High Court on Thursday set aside the conviction of PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Capt (retd) Mohammad Safdar handed down by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference four years ago and acquitted the couple. In July 2018, the accountability court had sentenced Maryam to seven years in prison and imposed a fine of two million pounds on her.
Pakistan’s largest commercial bank in the private sector, HBL, faces allegations of facilitating terror financing during the 2010-19 period, a charge that the bank said it is contesting “fully and vigorously” in a US court. Media reports suggested that some 370 individual complainants had demanded compensation from HBL. Developments in the Sara Inam murder case have been reported by the police on Sunday revealing that the accused, Shahnawaz Amir — son of senior journalist Ayaz Amir — tried tampering with the evidence. The police said they recovered six mobile phones from the crime scene, out of which five of them belonged to Shahnawaz, while one of them was registered in the victim’s name.
